Description

An edited and annotated edition of a delightfully ribald classic, this is the first since 1873 and the first modern fully annotated edition of La comedia llamada Serafina.

The prose of the first few decades of sixteenth-century Spain has long been overshadowed by that of its surrounding epochs. On the one side, stretching well into the seventeenth century, there is that most important body of literature known as the Golden Age. On the other side, there is a flowering of important fifteenth-century works, over which the Celestina reigns supreme. As a result, most humanistic comedy, appearing as it does between these two great periods, has suffered ill-deserved neglect.

Dille’s purpose here is to make available for the first time a careful edition of the Serafina based on the two known sixteenth-century printings, those of 1521and 1546. Although much could be said about this comedy, the introductory comments are kept to a minimum while the text is annotated as completely as possible.
