GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Knowledge of chemical changes and chemistry of the Universe is crucial and

indispensable need of our life. Life is impossible without chemistry. When two substances

interact with each other a new substance may be isolated or not and this is explained in

chemistry. Number of chemical reactions occurs during our daily chowrses. In all branches

of science; chemistry plays a very important role.

Modern human experience places a large emphasis upon material world from a day of birth to

the last day of life of living being from both kingdoms, we are preoccupied

everywhere. Everything else is somehow related to chemistry in which we study

properties, composition and transformation of matter. It is one of the vital pillars of the

natural sciences. Modern medicine is firmly rooted in the chemical nature of the human

body. Chemistry has the power to explain everything in this world from ordinary to unusual.

Nature itself is a natural laboratory of the Universe and at every moment diverse reactions are

continuously occurring within it. Large number of organic, inorganic and

co-ordinate molecules are formed and have their own importance and identity. These

molecules are produced by various organisms, plant and animal kingdoms which having their

natural, medicinal, industrial, pharmaceutical and biochemical applications and significances.

Literature Review Phenol

In 1834; during distillation of coal tar1 Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge

isolated phenol. He studied chemical characteristics and carried out other analysis

for justification of structure of phenoi2. As per German terminology he named phenol as

Karbolsaure.

Auguste Laurent introduced new terminology; phene for benzene 3, which became

primary word in the name of phenol and later phenyl. Pure phenol was isolated by

Auguste 4. Monophenols are called as simple phenols,
